Cheese Tosti and Espresso

Cheese Tosti and Espresso

Following are a few food snapshots from my trip to Amsterdam. I ate about 50 cheese tostis in 8 days. I loved them! I think I just liked saying "tosti"! A cheese tosti and an espresso was enough fuel for hours of sightseeing.

Snack Time!

Snack time in the hotel room: cubes of Gouda cheese, chunks of dark chocolate, and red wine, all from Albert Heijn, Amsterdam's chain grocery store. I couldn't get enough of this place, marvelling at all the foreign foodstuffs in their cool packaging. It wasn't bland and flavorless like most grocery-store brand stuff, either (sorry Hannaford-I still love you though!)

Dutch Apple Pie with Ice Cream and Cream

I snarfed this thing down in about five minutes. It was absolutely delicious. When I ordered it with ice cream and whipped cream, I was expecting a giant, Friendly's-esque montrosity and braced myself. But look at those proportions! Perfect! A tiny scoop of ice cream, a dab of whipped cream, and a perfect single-serving of pie. No "super-sized" American portions in Amsterdam. Amen!

This was my first meal in Amsterdam: hot chocolate, orange juice, hard boiled egg, Dutch "Breakfast Bread," jam, and a croissant. Delightful! The breakfast bread was dense and spongy and spicey.
