Eggs

The other night for dinner I had an unusual craving for scrambled eggs, green salad, and cheese. Voila.

While I'm on the subject of eggs, Wiley has just published this lovely little book called, yes, Eggs. It has lots of really nice color photographs (and good recipes!)

Kitchen Surprise

I call this "Kitchen Surprise" because I searched through the kitchen for whatever I could find to whip something up with. I ended up with rice, veggie "sausage" links, frozen peas and carrots, canned diced tomatoes, and oregano, basil, thyme, salt and pepper. Not bad.

Hot Lunch: Providence Edition

G and I took a trip up to Providence a couple weeks ago to find him a place to live during school, and I snapped these pics...

Awesome.

Next time I'm in Providence I'm so getting a coffee cabinet and french fries at Haven Bros. The diner is plugged into a lamp post for electricty?! Ha!

Here is a delicious IPA along with some garlic dipping oil and bread at the Union Station Brewery. I guess it used to be called John Harvards. I love breweries, and this place did not disappoint. I also tried the Rhode Island IPA at Trinity which was really good.

Neat old signs.

Indian food at Taste of India on Wickenden St.: channa masala, rice, and garlic nan. Yum!

Ok, this has nothing to do with food, but we were highly amused at the artwork hung right behind the television in our hotel room.

Affogato

Affogato is vanilla ice cream with hot espresso poured over it. This is actually vanilla ice cream with decaffeinated LaVazza espresso coffee poured over it. Better with real espresso, but this still did the trick. If you love coffee ice cream, affogato will make you faint with joy. This is definitely one of my top five favorite desserts. (It looks much nicer in a small glass as opposed to a giant cereal bowl.)

Hot Lunch Book Shelf: My Life in France by Julia Child

I don't believe in twisting yourself into knots of excuses and explanations over the food you make. When one's hostess starts in with self-deprecations such as "Oh, I don't know how to cook..." or "Poor little me...," or "This may taste awful...," it is so dreadful to have to reassure her that everything is delicious and fine, whether it is or not. Besides, such admissions only draw attention to one's shortcomings (or self-perceived shortcomings), and make the other person think, "Yes, you're right, this really is an awful meal!" Maybe the cat has fallen into the stew, or the lettuce has frozen, or the cake has collapsed - eh bien, tant pis!"

Right on! From My Life in France by Julia Child.

This book is absolutely lovely: Child is a wonderful writer and storyteller, and the book is filled with gorgeous black and white photos her husband took of them in Paris. Highly, highly recommended (and I'm only on page 70!)

Don't you hate it when you ask for the rest of your meal to go, and then they wrap it up in a plastic bag and plop it in the middle of the table while you're still finishing your drinks? This is a dramatic re-enactment at Pacifico in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. (We love this restaurant and they have awesome margaritas, so nothing against Pacifico!)

Sick Food

Home sick today, which means sick food. Here we have a bowl of Annie's Organic Bernie O's. I plucked this out of my disaster preparedness kit (canned food, LL Bean Emergency Radio, dust masks), as I was certainly feeling like a disaster today: clogged up chest, fatigue, scratchy throat. The whole can has 300 calories, only 10 of which are fat calories - only 1 gram of fat total! I had no idea this was so low in fat. High sodium though - 680mg. Yikes. Ah well. I won't really be concerned with sodium (or fat) intake if the chlorine manufacturing plant near my apartment gets blown up.

Anthony Bourdain's Favorite Dive Bars

Here's the list. A friend of mine works right near the Distinguised Wakamba Cocktail Lounge, so I definitely have to check that place out!

Muesli

I am now obsessed with muesli. A co-worker of mine was talking about how she had recently started making muesli at home, complete with the shredded apples, and I thought, hmmm, this sounds like a good idea for breakfast now that it's hot out and I don't want to be eating hot oatmeal every morning. So I now keep a box of Alpen at work, and mix it up with blueberries and fat-free Stonyfield Farm vanilla yogurt. Oh this is so good. I highly recommend this mixture. My co-worker buys Familia brand, so I bought a box of their no sugar added muesli to give it a try. But I'm really happy with the Alpen and will definitely buy Alpen again. And it fills me up for a good three hours! Very important if you're out hiking the Alps, or sitting at a computer!
